Each October, the Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency and the National Cybersecurity Alliance lead the cybersecurity community in an educational campaign around the impact of cybersecurity breaches and best practices to prevent them. Cybersecurity Awareness Month was created to raise awareness about the importance of cybersecurity among individual citizens and companies alike. As exemplified by the theme, "Do Your Part. #BeCyberSmart," the campaign serves to remind us that everyone has a role in ensuring the security of data and systems.
Events, educational materials, videos, blogs, and more will be produced throughout the month by a variety of government entities, non-profits, and commercial organizations to illustrate this shared responsibility. To organize the vast amounts of information, the month is divided into themed weeks with a focus on the threat of phishing and a push to increase interest in cybersecurity careers:
- Week of October 4 (Week 1): Be Cyber Smart.
- Week of October 11 (Week 2): Fight the Phish!
- Week of October 18 (Week 3): Explore. Experience. Share. - Cybersecurity Career Awareness Week
- Week of October 25 (Week 4): Cybersecurity First
This idea of "doing your part" is not just a promotional tagline. It is being put into practice with the recent release of the Executive Order on Improving the Nation's Cybersecurity (Cyber EO). The Cyber EO was created to prioritize a focus on cybersecurity and guide agencies in improving their security posture to strengthen our national resilience against the ever growing threat landscape. Key goals of the EO are:
- Improve software supply chain security
- Create a standard playbook for responding to cyber incidents
- Improve detection of cybersecurity incidents
- Improve cybersecurity investigation and remediation
- Modernize and implement stronger cybersecurity standards in government
Many of the cybersecurity events listed on GovEvents speak directly to achieving these goals, bringing together the public and private sectors to discuss and develop solutions. - CyberSatGov (October 5-7, 2021; Reston, VA) -- The recent high-profile ransomware attacks on the meat and fuel industries have led the Justice Department to categorize these investigations at the same level as terrorism probes. This event will detail how to prevent next-generation cyberattacks and establish partnerships with leading solution providers.
- The Emerging Approach to Cyber Situation Awareness: Leveraging AI/ML for Actionable Intelligence (October 12, 2021; webcast) -- The rapid digitization of government services has led to a dramatic increase in the number of cyber attacks. This webinar will explore how leaders are meeting the moment with emerging technologies to better protect their sensitive data while maintaining their agencies fundamental operations.
- Cybersecurity Executive Order: 10 Database Security Best Practices to Help Meet Mandates (October 13, 2021; webcast) -- Attendees will learn the greatest risks organizations face when it comes to database security today, along with tips to create a strong database security program amid today's threat landscape, and database security best practices to assist in meeting the Presidential Executive Order on Cybersecurity.
- Cyberweek 2021 (October 18-22, 2021; virtual) -- With some in-person events in the Washington, D.C. area, CyberWeek will also take place digitally across the U.S., bringing together C-suite leaders from major technology companies, government agencies, and education across hundreds of community-driven events to share best practices, connect, and collaborate.
