Lawmakers upset over new revelations of GSA spending

Lawmakers on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee are upset over new disclosures about spending at the General Services Administration.

At a press conference Thursday, Rep. John Mica (R-Fla.), the committee chairman, provided details from an ongoing internal GSA investigation that revealed one of the agency's divisions spent more than $268,000 on an awards ceremony held in the Washington, D.C., area in November 2010.

GSA's Federal Acquisition Service spent more than $34,000 to host the one-day event at the Crystal Gateway Marriot in Crystal City, Va, according to a letter from GSA's inspector general Brian Miller.

The Data Act winding its way through Congress is designed to increase transparency and accountability for federal agency spending. It borrows much from the reporting set-up established by the 2009 Recovery Act. The Data Act has passed the House and is being debated in the Senate. One watchdog group, the Sunlight Foundation, says the bill packs quite a punch. Part of that punch will ding federal managers responsible for all of the reporting it will require. GSA clarifies conference policy but industry concerns persist

General Services Administration employees are not banned from traveling to conferences. But they do need to take a few extra steps to attend.

Industry representatives can breathe a sigh of relief as GSA EXPO in San Antonio next week still will see many agency employees walking the conference halls. The Industry Advisory Council and American Council for Technology's Management of Change Conference in Cambridge, Md., in early June will enjoy more than a few GSA employees beyond the invited speakers.

DoD Calls Off Annual Procurement Conference

Defense Department officials have called off large annual contracting-focused conference just weeks before it was set to begin.

The invitation-only DoD Procurement Conference and Training Symposium was to have taken place in Orlando, Fla. Between May 21 and May 24. A notice posted on a department website said officials had decided they needed more time to better align the training programs with DoD acquisition policy. It wasn't immediately clear whether recent backlash against agency-sponsored conferences in the wake of the General Services Administration scandal played a role in the decision. Read More >>
