The 8th annual IT Security Automation Conference

October is National Cyber security month and will be kicked off in Baltimore with a three day conference with a focus on automating security.

The concept of security and the federal government is inevitably wrapped in guidance from National Institute of Standards and Technology NIST.

On October 3, 2012, NIST is working with a wide range of members of the security community to produce the 8th Annual IT Security Automation Conference.

Listen to the interview with Dave Waltermire, security automation architect, in NIST's Computer Security Division.

In the interview, Waltermire gives an overview of the conference, talks about security automation, the history of SCAP, competing standards, the challenges of generating standards, and the role the federal government in this process.

The conference covers continuous monitoring, software assurance, incident handling, analytics, as well as trusted computing.

Washington gives props to feds at annual awards gala

A doctor at the National Institutes of Health who helped pioneer the use of a drug to combat the transmission of HIV from infected pregnant women to their babies has been named federal employee of the year by a nonprofit group.

Lynne Mofenson, a pediatric infectious disease specialist, will be honored at a black-tie event Thursday in Washington for her work in the late 1980s and 1990s to prevent mother-to-child transmission of AIDS. At that time, there was little that could be done to prevent such infection; today the number of HIV cases found in U.S. children has dropped to less than 150 per year.

Sequestration worries speakers at defense forum

The specter of sequestration loomed large over the 2012 Dayton Small Business Defense Procurement Summit on August 29.

The possibility of automatic, across-the-board budget cuts to the Department of Defense was a hot topic as entrepreneurs and DoD officials gathered at the Dayton Convention Center to discuss how small businesses can land contracts with the U.S. Air Force and other military departments.

Military Mobile Power Summit

The military is serious about renewable energy. So much so, that the Department of Defense could be spending $10 billion per year on renewables by 2030.

In one of the latest examples of the military's commitments to renewable energy, the Navy recently awarded a $3.8 million contract to FuelCell Energy to develop power systems for unmanned underwater vehicles.
