By the Tweets: GovDelivery’s Digital Communications Tour

GovDelivery's digital communications tour is in full swing! Over the last month the tour has visited Oakland, CA and Austin, TX, sparking conversations on the value of technology, outreach, and communications in government, as well as strategies to increase that value. The tour has hosted many innovative, successful speakers, from private sector thought leaders with successful social media start-ups to public sector communicators working in state, city, and county government. Tour speakers have presented on trends, strategies and tactics to connect with more stakeholders and inspire them to take action - online or offline - to drive mission value.

But the tour isn't over! In April, GovDelivery will be taking the tour to three more cities, Raleigh, NC and Washington, D.C., before hosting the final stop in St. Paul, MN. If you haven't already, make sure to register for the event in your city today, space is limited!

When “Liking” Isn’t Enough

In this age of and focus on social media it may seem counterintuitive to say "you need to turn likes into email." But that was precisely the message during a panel at Potomac Tech Wire's Social Media Outlook.  When you stop and think about it, it actually makes a lot of sense.

Facebook is a great medium for distributing information and connecting with your customers and community. But, Facebook is a third party app. They control the data as it relates to your "friends." They are the owners of the demographics and details on your Facebook community. You can of course get this intelligence, for a fee. With all of your careful curation of news and interactions, shouldn't you own some of the data about your audience? Of course you should.

2014 FOSE Blogger & Speaker Meetup

March 20, 2014 - Vienna, VA - 1105 Media Group, organizers of the FOSE and GovSec Conferences & Expos, hosted a FOSE 2014 Blogger and Speaker Meet-up on Wednesday, March 19 at the 1105 Media Group offices in Vienna, VA. In its 6th year, this invitation only event was held specifically for government technology influencers, FOSE speakers and bloggers. Held as an open forum, round table discussion, attendees were given an opportunity to discuss key elements of the upcoming FOSE Conference. The conversation moved from government events and the obstacles that continue to challenge them, along with the uprising of mobile and social media and how they are influencing the way government interacts with the public, cybersecurity and more.

Attendees at this meet-up included influencers; Jack Gates, Open Source Leadership blog, Dick Davies, SalesLab, Tom Suder, President at MobileGov, Ghadi Ben-Yehuda,  Director of Innovation and Social Media for IBM Center for The Business of Government, Tammi Marcoullie, Program Manager for Challenge.gov - GSA, Lovisa Williams, Sr. Policy Advisor at U.S. Office of Management & Budget, Guy Timberlake, Co-Founder and Chief Visionary Officer of The American Small Business Coalition, LLC, Penelope Parker, Vice Chair of the Woman in Technology Communications Committee. Representatives were also present from CSFI, Tuvel Communications, LLC, 1105 Media Group and GovEvents.

Don’t Call it a Comeback…The Rise of Webinars

Over the past week we've seen a couple of posts talking about the rising popularity of webinars and virtual meetings. At GovEvents, we saw a 30% increase in the number of webinars posted on our site in 2013.

Given general industry trends, this increase makes sense as there are some key advantages to webinars including:

-          Eliminating the time and expense of travel - this is especially true in the government market where there have been tight restrictions placed on travel spending

-          Potential to reach more people the day of the webinar as well as through an archived link

-          Connection to and interaction with social platforms
