Agencies Justify Conference Tabs Above $100,000

Agencies have submitted summaries of conference spending in fiscal 2012 to the Office of Management and Budget that include justifications for training events that exceeded $100,000. The reports are required by a May 2012 memo from Acting Budget Director Jeffrey Zients.

Expanding on a 2011 OMB directive and executive order from President Obama promoting efficient spending, the latest Zients memo requires reductions in travel and conferences in the wake of the spring 2012 scandal involving extravagant spending at a General Services Administration training conference. It prohibits conferences costing more than $500,000 and requires agencies to report on events costing more than $100,000. Reports from all agencies were due Jan. 31.

Defense Conferences Canceled, Imperiled As DoD Budget Woes Widen

WASHINGTON: In a telling sign of the uncertain economic and spending climate in the defense world - faced with sequestration and the possibility of a year-long Continuing Resolution -- at least three defense conferences have been cancelled in the last two months and defense companies continue to pare their participation in even the biggest shows, the air show in Paris and Farnborough.

It's no secret that events targeting government employees have fallen on tough times. We've used this space repeatedly to encourage immixGroup clients and channel partners to re-evaluate their event marketing plans. Unfortunately, we're seeing more and more examples to prove this re-evaluation is necessary.

DON IT Conference Cancelled

In response to DoD and DON guidance, the DON IT Conference, West Coast 2013 has been cancelled. The conference was scheduled for Jan. 28-30, 2013, at the San Diego Convention Center. Please cancel all travel and lodging reservations as soon as possible.

The AFCEA West Conference, scheduled for Jan. 29-31, 2013, at the San Diego Convention Center will still take place. ...

Several senior DoD and DON leaders are scheduled to appear as speakers and panel participants. Local commands are encouraged to attend when no travel costs will be incurred.

Feds Plan on Attending Fewer, More Focused Events and Trade Shows Next Year

For many years, government contractors relied on events and trade shows to connect with their federal customers.  These events provided highly valuable face-to-face time for enhancing existing relationships, as well as for help in procuring new contracts.

This is all about to change in 2013.  According a recent Market Connections poll, 38% of government employees plan to attend fewer educational and trade events in 2013 than last year.
