February 1st wrapped up the IDGA Biometrics for National Security and Law Enforcement conference, closing a productive two days of presentations, networking and deal-making.

I attended the IDGA conference Jan. 31, and sat in on a few of the day's sessions to get a sense of what's new in the community and what to expect in the coming months and years from government agencies, independent vendors and the industry as a whole.

Survey: Feds can and should continue attending conferences

As the Obama administration and Congress continue a crackdown on agency spending for travel and conferences, a clear majority of federal employees believe such gatherings are important and that their supervisors remain open to their participation, a new survey shows.

An online poll conducted in mid-August by Government Executive's research division, the Government Business Council, drew from employees at 30 agencies some 350 usable responses addressing the value of attending conferences at a time of embarrassing news stories detailing overspending at off-site events by agencies such as the General Services Administration and the Veterans Affairs Department.

Senator ‘sickened’ by new GSA controversy

Leaders of the key Senate panel overseeing the General Services Administration responded to news of another conference featuring questionable spending by releasing a redacted version of a letter from the acting GSA chief summarizing progress on his "top-to-bottom" review of the troubled agency's management procedures.

"At a time when Congress must make the toughest budget choices we have ever made, I am sickened to hear more stories about the reckless disregard GSA shows for taxpayer dollars," said Sen. Joe Lieberman, I-Conn., chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, after House Republicans revealed details of a November 2010 Federal Acquisition Service conference held in Arlington, Va.
