With October recognized as cybersecurity awareness month, we have been giving some thoughts to the areas of cybersecurity where events and training can make a big difference. One area that jumped to mind was general cybersecurity awareness training for all members of your organization.

In talking about "insider threat" most people think of the recent Snowden/NSA case where a credentialed and background cleared employee knowingly leaked data  he rightfully had access to. But insider threat is more than that. It is also accidental data leaks, breeches, and security violations. You may have great virus protection, firewall technology, even continuous monitoring devices, but one errant click by an employee can bring your IT system to its knees. Continue reading

Improving Training at Your Agency Just Got A Lot Easier

Two federal agencies announced on Monday a joint effort to boost training and other human capital services for agencies across government, saying the move would save money and improve human resources support.

The Office of Personnel Management has partnered with the General Services Administration to create a contract vehicle that will ease the process for agencies to hire private companies for HR consulting. While OPM and GSA are still finalizing the details of the arrangement, a memorandum of understanding signed Monday spelled out a system that eases agencies away from the acquisition process for their human capital needs.

Impact of a Retiring Federal Workforce

We've been hearing the warnings for years now, "The aging federal workforce will retire in droves - we need to prepare." While the "retirement tsunami" has not come to fruition (at least yet), there is still a real truth in the impact an aging workforce has on the government.

A GAO report found that the percentage of federal workers eligible to retire will roughly double by 2017. With a rough economy and general economic uncertainty, many people have deferred their retirement, but that trend seems to be changing with the retirement rate up to 3.5 percent in 2012, from 2.5 percent in 2009. What does this slower, but nonetheless meaningful, wave of retirements mean for the government and the industry partners that serve it?

Government’s Going Virtual: The Transition From In-person to Online Events and Training

Everything is happening virtually these days. Courses, career fairs, conferences and even concerts are increasingly conducted online, educating and entertaining global audiences. While television has to some degree played this role for the past several decades, what makes this trend noteworthy is that it's happening on the web.

For the public sector, in particular, virtual events are gaining traction due to a "perfect storm" of overlapping factors -- namely, extensive travel restrictions, greater public scrutiny on in-person conferences and advancement of interactive communications technology.
