How Akamai is Helping Government Agencies Defend Against DDoS and DNS Attacks

Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) and Web application attacks, along with attacks targeting DNS (Domain Name Server) infrastructure, represent some of the most critical threats to organizations today. These attacks target a wide range of organizations and can cause downtime, loss of confidential information and revenue, drive up bandwidth costs, and severely impact an organization’s reputation.

In December 2012, DNS Amplification attacks were discovered leveraging authoritative government DNS. This DNS traffic contained spoofed IP addresses for intended and/or additional targets with the intent of negatively impacting DNS availability and performance. In addition, from December 26, 2012 through the week of January 4, 2013, numerous financial institutions were targeted by large DDoS attacks. In both cases, Akamai was able to actively defend customers against these attack campaigns.
