Software Assessment & Asset Management: A Critical Tool for Agencies
Agencies throughout the federal government spend billions of dollars collectively on software to run their operations and achieve their mission. The Government Accountability Office (GAO) knows legacy systems are a major contributor to the problem, while the U.S. House of Representatives has passed the Strengthening Agency Management and Oversight of Software Assets (SAMOSA) Act to overhaul software acquisition to cut down costs.
There is another nagging problem with how agencies acquire and use software – they don’t know enough about what software versions are in use, which software is no longer being used, where the holes are in software deployments, which packages are old and vulnerable, and what is being used that isn’t approved for government use. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has released a binding operational directive on mitigating risk from end-of-support edge devices, which often have end-of-support software.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify how to leverage end-of-life/end-of-service support to clean up and consolidate the software used by your agency
- Delineate the procedures to remove duplicative software without interfering with systems operations
- Evaluate potential cost savings to be realized while focusing on active software deployments
