Deploy Full Stack Spectrum Situational Awareness System with Networked Handheld Sensors

Everything goes wireless/RF, it is the matter of life for both commercial and military communication. Desired and undesired signals are on top of each other, whether it is intentional or unintentional, the effectiveness, integrity and security of the communications are at mercy how the spectrum is managed and operated. 

 

It is critically important that military communication networks can run on intended spectrum without interruption, system can dynamically allocate necessary resources without interrupting payload performance, identify hostile spectrum manipulation like jamming, crowding, spoofing in both terrestrial and space. 

 

The biggest challenges for EMSO today are:

  • Signal under management has very wide frequency range, like 5G can operate from 600MHz to 50GHz, this greatly reduces existing signal monitoring station’s effectiveness.
  • Signals are digitally modulated with wide bandwidth; frequency domain DF accuracy may be impacted.
  • Emitter of interest is mobile; this is probably the biggest challenges of spectrum operation.

Leveraging one or more handheld spectrum analyzer/ receivers as mobile sensor, build an ad hoc monitoring network with mobile routers. In addition, system software can perform advanced signal analysis to provide spectrum occupancy, direction finding, over the air signal demodulation and protocol analysis, it is a flexible, easy to deploy mobile EMSO network to provide efficient, accurate and full stack (physical layer to protocol layer) spectrum management.

Rolland Zhang has over 20 years of experience in wireless communications, interference analysis, and network optimization. Work with both service providers and government agencies to troubleshoot spectrum management and interference issues. Published many application notes and papers related to real time spectrum analysis, interference management and over the air signal scanning. Recently Rolland spearheaded Keysight spectrum management program and introduce KSMS software, 5G cell scanning and DF TDoA.
