The most expansive explosion of innovative activity in federal acquisition in a quarter of a century is continuing to gain power as it spreads across the government, bottom to top, and side to side. Last year’s theme was “Acquisition Innovation in Action.” This year we are building on that theme as we share the expanding successes and initiatives across the government. The theme of this year’s Acquisition Excellence (AE) Conference is Surging Successes in Acquisition Innovation.  Successes are mounting and the best initiatives are being adopted and adapted across wide expanses of government from Civilian to Defense to the Intelligence Community. The surge is being driven to greater height and broader scope by: 

•    mission driven urgency
•    aggressive goals for shorter lead times
•    shorter delivery schedules 
•    greater agility and flexibility in procurement processes
•    a desire to modernize Information Technology at the speed of change 
•    engaging new suppliers with new technology and business models
•    building new workforce skills to buy digital technologies
•    working with “bots” and Artificial Intelligence to speed work 
•    protecting the integrity of supply chains
•    managing rather than avoiding risk

The impact of successful acquisition innovation is truly remarkable, and the opportunities continue to multiply. AE will focus on innovations that can improve every step of the acquisition process. The success of those innovations will build organizations dedicated to brokering new kinds of relationships between government and industry so we can bring the right solutions to meet the government’s requirements

AE will present examples from the Institute for Innovation project, including the “Periodic Table of Acquisition Innovations” sponsored by OFPP, an online tool providing access to successful acquisition innovation case studies for adoption, work of the acquisition innovation advocates and procurement innovation labs, implementation of legislative initiatives designed to improve acquisition, and initiatives of workforce insurgents determined to deliver on mission needs.
