As the upcoming elections approach, the integrity of our electoral systems is under greater scrutiny than ever before. Election security professionals are on the front lines, tasked with the critical mission of safeguarding the technology that underpins our democracy.

But trust in elections continues to decline. Election officials all around the country are taking extraordinary steps to reassure the public that election results are secure and accurate, from placing GPS devices on voting equipment to document their location and movements to using video cameras at early-voting ballot drop boxes to show they are not being “stuffed.” Even a federal judge has warned his fellow jurists to step up cybersecurity in the event of election litigation after Nov. 5.

All these actions are worthwhile, but they also make clear that Cybersecurity is only part of the equation. Leadership and human factors play a pivotal role in restoring faith in our electoral infrastructure.
