CyberThreats 2024: Combatting The Evolving Threat Landscape (Day One)

This event qualifies for .2 CEUs

This event qualifies for 2 CPEs

This event qualifies for 2 CLPs

The means and methods of launching cyber attacks against government agencies and critical infrastructure industries at all levels continue to proliferate rapidly.

The U.S. government is responsible for attending to our national interests, from federal safety nets such as environmental protection and Social Security to national defense and protection against hostile foreign actors, whether individuals, terrorist groups or nation-states.

Hundreds of agencies and hundreds of thousands of government employees face a flood of cyber threats every day, some of them straightforward, like phishing or DDoS attacks, some of them bent on committing fraud, such as fake invoices to Medicare. And some are quite sophisticated, intent on obtaining national security information.

Learning Objectives:

  • Review the current cyberthreat landscape, including new techniques such as the use of deepfakes for fraud, misinformation and disinformation
  • Outline approaches to earn support for modernization efforts and reducing the use of legacy systems that pose greater security risks
  • Evaluate the impact of AI on Zero Trust initiatives, identity credentialing and access management (ICAM) programs, and app security
  • Delineate the impact of a shrinking and aging workforce and how to use technology to offset the effect

Session One:  Retrospective shaping Perspective: The Evolution of the Cyber Threat Landscape

The universe of cyber threats continues to expand. Ransomware attacks continue to paralyze organizations, phishing attacks continue to snare unwary users, the software supply chain is still vulnerable to malware insertions. Even DDoS attacks still bring websites to a standstill. In other words, no cyber threat, whether from individuals or hostile nation-states, ever truly goes away. Our panel of experts will review current trends in cyber threats, what agencies may not have seen yet but should be on guard for, and best practices to keep cybersecurity measures up to date.

Session Two: Navigating the Risks of Rapid API Integration

The rapid rise of API usage and the push to integrate APIs into applications does not mean they are without risks—especially when it comes to cybersecurity. APIs can make it easier for attackers to exploit vulnerabilities, enabling unauthorized access or data exposure, increasing the risk of data breaches and malicious activities. Our panel of government and industry experts will discuss how APIs are transforming the cyberthreat landscape and how organizations can secure their APIs to protect sensitive information and fend off attacks.

Session Three: Maintaining Security During Modernization

The federal government has been pushing to modernize its IT systems for more than a decade, but some legacy systems are still in use and even newer IT needs frequent refresh to keep up with innovation. Meanwhile, agencies’ workforces are aging, those with expertise on legacy IT are retiring, and the government struggles to compete with industry for IT talent, particularly regarding cybersecurity. Our panel of experts will share their experiences and insights about how to maintain security while contending with this tricky environment.
