CyberThreats 2024: Combatting the Evolving Threat Landscape (Day Two)

This event qualifies for .2 CEUs

This event qualifies for 2 CPEs

This event qualifies for 2 CLPs

The means and methods of launching cyber attacks against government agencies and critical infrastructure industries at all levels continue to proliferate rapidly.

From cyber attacks on water and wastewater treatment systems to ransomware targeting hospitals and physicians’ practices, phishing attacks to straightforward fraud, state and local agencies, educational institutions, and tribal and territorial governments often find themselves contending with the same threats as federal agencies – but without access to the same resources.

Learning Objectives:

  • List the top priorities of government cybersecurity professionals in combatting current and emerging threats, including those created by widespread accessibility of genAI tools
  • Understand the role that data analytics can play in helping existing cybersecurity protections become more robust
  • Delineate the risks of legacy systems and steps to mitigate them

Session One:  Retrospective shaping Perspective: The Evolution of the Cyber Threat Landscape

The universe of cyber threats continues to expand. State and local governments, responsible for operating much of the day-to-day infrastructure used by their residents, are seeing attacks on water systems, for instance, while state medical facilities have been victimized by ransomware. Our panel of experts will review current trends in cyber threats, what agencies may not have seen yet but should be on guard for, and best practices to keep cybersecurity measures up to date.

Session Two: Navigating the Risks of Rapid API Integration

The sudden emergence of commercial artificial intelligence (AI) and push to incorporate it into apps does not mean it’s risk-free – particularly regarding cybersecurity. The states are responsible for conducting elections, for instance, and AI tools make it much easier for bad actors to create deepfakes, whether text, audio or video. Our panel of government and industry experts discuss how AI is affecting the cyberthreat landscape, and how agencies can harness its capabilities to fend off attacks.

Session Three: Maintaining Security in Times of Transition

State and local agencies have been pushing to modernize their IT systems for more than a decade, but they must contend with tight budgets and limited human resources. Meanwhile, their workforces are aging, those with expertise on legacy IT are retiring, and the agencies struggle to compete with industry for IT talent, particularly regarding cybersecurity. Our panel of experts will share their experiences and insights about how to maintain security while contending with this complicated environment.
